Introduction

Virtual Worlds, solving real world problemsVirtual Worlds (VW) represent a transformative convergence of physical and digital realities, creatingimmersive environments where users can interact, work, learn and play in unprecedented ways. ThisStrategic Research and Innovation Agenda identifies the required foundational concepts andtechnological advancements driving VW, highlighting their potential to revolutionise various sectors, including industry, entertainment, education, and commerce. By examining the interplay betweenAugmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), or Mixed Reality (MR) and other emerging technologies likeDigital Twins (DT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of VWs'prospects and associated research and innovation gaps. A deeper exploration of VWs' impact on societyand the economy gives context to the application and technology perspectives.VW are persistent, immersive environments, based on technologies including 3D and extended reality(XR), which make it possible to blend physical and digital worlds in real-time, for a variety of purposessuch as designing, making simulations, collaborating, learning, socialising, carrying out transactions orproviding entertainment1. The Working Groups will provide structured spaces for members to come together around strategic topics, emerging technological and industrial priorities, policy needs, standardisation challenges, skills development, and innovation opportunities. Their purpose is to transform shared expertise into concrete outcomes, supporting the objectives of the Virtual Worlds Partnership and contributing to the evolution of the ecosystem.

Through these Working Groups, members will be able to exchange knowledge, identify collaboration opportunities, contribute to policy and industrial priorities, support SRIA-related activities, and develop tangible outputs such as position papers, recommendations, workshops, showcases, matchmaking activities and other ecosystem-building actions.

The process is designed to be open and collaborative, while ensuring a clear governance structure, strategic alignment and measurable impact. Working Group proposals will be reviewed by the VWA Board of Directors according to criteria such as strategic relevance, expected impact, operational feasibility and community value.

Members interested in creating or joining a Working Group are invited to consult the attached document, which provides further details on the principles, proposal process, evaluation criteria, roles, operational model and expected outputs
